Embedded Engineer (C++)

About Vitestro

Founded in 2017 in Utrecht, Vitestro is pioneering the future of blood collection with the Aletta® Autonomous Robotic Phlebotomy Device™ (ARPD™). This groundbreaking medical device combines advanced multi-modal imaging (near-infrared, ultrasound, and Doppler ultrasound) with robotics and AI to perform the entire diagnostic blood draw procedure autonomously.

By addressing critical healthcare staffing shortages and improving patient experience, Vitestro is transforming one of the most common and essential medical procedures. With more than 90 team members and growing rapidly, we are scaling our impact. As we placed our first devices with customers, we are now expanding our team to ensure successful implementation and long-term reliability.

At Vitestro, we are committed to continuous innovation and improvement.

As our Embedded Engineer, you work at the intersection of software and hardware, helping us develop and maintain the real-time embedded Linux platform at the heart of the Vitestro device. You work deep in the system, where the performance of C/C++ applications, the operating system, networking, and hardware all come together. You develop and improve operating-system functionality, investigate complex performance and reliability issues, and build the automated testing needed to understand how changes affect the device. A particular focus is real-time performance, where timing at the microsecond level can directly influence device behavior. As our software and product continue to evolve, you help us stay in control of that complexity by making performance measurable, regressions visible, and issues easier to diagnose—both during development and when supporting devices in the field.

First months at Vitestro

In your first months, you get to know our hardware, embedded Linux platform, and the C/C++ applications running on it. You build a strong understanding of how the applications interact with the real-time platform and how operating-system behavior influences the performance of the wider device. Working closely with the team, you start delivering changes to the OS and its networked subsystems and take ownership of items from our embedded software backlog. At the same time, you begin developing a nightly testing pipeline that integrates software changes, runs systematic performance tests on the device, and makes regressions visible before they reach a release. As your understanding of the system grows, you contribute to debugging and root-cause analysis of complex issues and help us improve the tools available for diagnosing problems both in development and in the field.

This is what success looks like

After 12 months, you have become a go-to engineer for our real-time embedded Linux platform. You have a deep understanding of how our C/C++ applications, operating system, and hardware interact, and can independently diagnose and resolve complex system-level issues. Device performance is continuously measured, with regressions caught through automated CI/CD and nightly testing before release. Your work helps the team maintain a reliable, performant platform and identify issues faster, both during development and in the field.

What You’ll Bring:

• Strong background in real-time embedded Linux and networked subsystems

• Proficiency in embedded software development using C/C++

• Hands-on experience with profiling and debugging on Linux

• A solid understanding of automated performance testing and regression detection

• Familiarity with software update and patching mechanisms for large software artifacts

• Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex system-level issues

• Comfortable working across the boundaries of application software, operating systems, and hardware

Nice to have

• Familiarity with CAN bus protocols; EtherCAT is a plus

• A background in regulated industries, such as medical devices, automotive, aerospace, or defence

• Hands-on involvement with software updates, remote diagnostics, or device provisioning in the field

• Knowledge of AWS IoT Core or comparable device-cloud platforms

• Exposure to post-market or in-field device support

• Understanding of embedded or device security principles

How We Work

At Vitestro, ownership is not a slogan - it is an expectation. We trust people to take responsibility, make decisions, and drive work forward.

We believe breakthroughs happen when talented people combine dedication, accountability, and teamwork. That means:

• We take initiative rather than wait for direction.
• We focus on execution and delivering results.
• We proactively remove blockers and help each other succeed.
• We challenge ideas, not people.
• We continuously learn, improve, and raise the bar.
• We celebrate team success over individual heroics.

We move fast, but we do so thoughtfully. We care deeply about quality because the technology we build ultimately impacts patients and healthcare professionals.

If you are looking for an environment where you can make a significant contribution, take ownership of meaningful work, and be surrounded by highly motivated colleagues, we'd love to meet you.

What we offer

• Competitive salary including pension plan

• 25 days of annual leave based on a full-time position
